CEBU FETES INCOMING TOURISM SECRETARY

Incoming Tourism Secretary Ma. Christina Garcia-Frasco outlines her priorities for Philippine tourism.

Tourism leaders and stakeholders, local government executives, legislators, members of the Consular Corps, and representatives of allied sectors have expressed support for Tourism Secretary-Designate Ma. Christina Garcia-Frasco.

Frasco was honored at “A Celebration of Cebu Tourism” hosted by the Province of Cebu and the Department of Tourism-Central Visayas (DOT7) at the Cebu Provincial Capitol Social Hall on Tuesday, June 21, 2022.

Among those expressing support for the Secretary-Designate were Marget Fernan-Villarica, representative of local travel trade operators, JPark Resort Chairman Justin Uy, Japanese Consul-General in Cebu Hideki Yamaji, Cebu City Councilor and Congressman-Elect Edu Rama, Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Ahong Chan and the Secretary-Designate’s husband, Fifth District Representative Vincent Franco “Duke” Frasco.

DOT7 Regional Director Shahlimar Hofer Tamano in his welcome remarks revealed that all the stakeholders have expressed eagerness to work with Frasco to harness the “limitless opportunities” for Cebu, “center of gravity in Philippine tourism.”

The Secretary-Designate’s mother, Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Garcia said she is confident that her daughter will perform well at the DOT as “she has always chosen to excel.”

Frasco, who was elected to a third term as Mayor of the Municipality of Liloan, Cebu in the May 2022 elections, was ranked Top-Performing Mayor in Central Visayas in a non-commissioned public satisfaction survey conducted in August 2021. During her administration, Liloan was awarded by the Manila Times as Top Philippine Model Municipality. The town was also named Top Philippine Education Hub, Top Retirement Haven, Top Philippine Wealth Center, and Most Resilient Municipality in the Philippines by various agencies and institutions. It was given by the Commission on Audit its “Unqualified Opinion” for post-audit findings in 2017, 2019, and 2020, the highest that can be achieved by a local government unit.

Frasco called on tourism stakeholders to help bring tourism back on its feet, saying, “As I have then, I am now offering the hand of collaboration to all tourism stakeholders and local officials across the country for us to work together to, not only reclaim the Philippines’ standing in the local stage, but to exceed it.”

A two-pronged approach to tourism growth was proposed by the Secretary-Designate, namely effective local government planning and implementation, including zoning and land use regulations and sustainability anchored on shared tourism governance between the private sector and government.
