Ikebana began with Ikenobo and is one of the defining features of traditional Japanese culture. Japanese priests made floral offerings at temples that lived near a pond, which is “ike” in Japanese, in a small hut called “bo.” Because of this, people started referring to the priests as “Ikenobo.” Seeing beauty in flowers and arranging them is associated with a heart that values nature and cares for other people — this is what Ikenobo Ikebana is all about. Consul General Hideaki Matsuo, the Consulate General of Japan to Cebu, also delivered a message on the enduring tradition of Ikenobo and its reflection of the universal heart and soul of humanity.
