The Human Project Foundation is a non-profit organization committed to developing emotionally resilient and well-rounded individuals. One of its key advocacies is Project 12—a groundbreaking initiative that aims to integrate EQ development as a core subject from Kinder to Grade 12 in both public and private schools, anchored on Daniel Goleman’s five components of Emotional Intelligence (EQ).

At the heart of Project 12 is a firm belief that education must focus not only on the mind (IQ) but also on the heart (EQ), if we are to raise whole persons—individuals who are not only intellectually capable but emotionally intelligent and socially responsible. Its mission is to equip every learner with self-awareness and self-regulation techniques, motivation, empathy, and strong social skills from an early age.

To make this possible, we have developed comprehensive teaching modules complete with detailed lesson plans, classroom activities, and even home engagement materials to ensure consistency of learning between the school and the home.

Following the UNESCO systemic approach to Social and Emotional Learning (SEL), Project 12 is designed to be implemented not just in classrooms, but school-wide and community-wide—creating a synergistic and sustainable culture of emotional intelligence.

The effectiveness of SEL is well-supported by research: a landmark meta-review covering 12 meta-analyses, encompassing 523 studies (61% of which were randomized controlled trials) involving 1 million students from 24 countries found that SEL programs significantly improve students’ social-emotional skills. Beyond that, they also produce enduring positive effects on academic outcomes and student behavior, increasing academic performance while reducing maladaptive behaviors.

In addition, we have developed EQ assessment tools for students to monitor their emotional growth over time. These assessments—administered at the beginning of every school year—which serve as a valuable guide for teachers and parents.  Looking ahead, we  plan to  conduct longitudinal  studies  after  Grade 12 in partnership with Psychology departments of major universities in Cebu to evaluate long-term outcomes and continuously strengthen the program.

We believe that teacher training is essential to the success of this vision. Teachers are the catalysts for this transformative shift. Their ability to model, teach, and reinforce EQ in daily classroom interactions will determine the depth and reach of this initiative. For this reason, we place strong emphasis on equipping educators through practical, research-based workshops that deepen their understanding of EQ and empower them with strategies for both their personal and professional lives.

Project 12 was officially launched in School Year 2024–2025.To date, we have implemented the Project across 58 pilot schools in Cebu Province, Silang, Cavite and Negros Oriental —including 43 public schools (37 elementary schools and 6 national high schools in Dumanjug, Cebu).

• University of San Jose-Recoletos – Balamban

• Consolatrix  College of Toledo City

• Sisters of Mary Boystown – Minglanilla

• Sisters of Mary Girlstown – Talisay City

• Sisters of Mary of Banneux, Inc. – Silang, Cavite

• Sisters of Mary School-Adlas, Inc. – Silang, Cavite

•Nehemiah School of Opportunities, Inc. – Guadalupe, Cebu

• St. Benedict Childhood Education Centre – Mabolo, Cebu

• Sage Prep Schoolhouse – Lahug, Cebu City

• Divine Life Institute of Cebu, Inc. – Liloan, Cebu

• Green Rose Academy – Compostela, Cebu

• Academia de San Agustin – Carmen, Cebu

• Dumanjug Districts 1 and 2 – 37 elementary schools and 7 National High Schools

• Colegio de San Pedro-Recoletos – Valencia, Negros Oriental

• San Pedro Academy-Recoletos – Valencia, Negros Oriental

We have trained over 1,600 teachers serving over 36,000 students from these pilot schools, with more trainings already scheduled for other LGUs in Cebu Province, Negros Island, Davao City and Malaybalay, Bukidnon. The rollout has been warmly received, and we are greatly encouraged by the enthusiastic response of both educators and communities. Their feedback affirms that emotional intelligence is not only needed—it is urgently essential.

The positive outcomes we have seen in students reveal a deeper truth: emotional intelligence  or EQ is a  lifelong  skill — essential  not only in the classroom,  but  in every environment, including the workplace. In response to this growing need, we have opened the training component of Project 12 to companies seeking to invest in the EQ development of their employees. This expansion enables us to help build resilient, people-centered organizations that value empathy, self-awareness, and meaningful human connection. It is also worth noting that we have already trained doctors and other professionals, equipping them to cope more effectively with the high-pressure demands of their fields.

Project 12 stands as a transformative force in education, reshaping how we nurture the hearts and minds of the next generation. By embedding emotional intelligence into both learning and leadership, we are creating pathways for students and adults alike to succeed—not just in performance, but in life.

As this movement expands into schools and workplaces, we carry forward one conviction: when people are equipped with emotional intelligence, they do not merely excel; they flourish, and they uplift others with them, all for the glory of God.
