STATEMENT OF SENATOR CHIZ ESCUDERO ON THE ENACTMENT OF R.A. NO. 12326
President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. has signed into law the measure that sets a five-year term for barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan officials, and moves the BSKE to November 2028.
This is a step that is expected to provide certainty and stability in governance — which is most important because the barangay are the government’s frontliners in any public service.
As the principal author of this measure in the Senate, it is clear to us that the purpose of this law is to fix the system and ensure that there is a clear cycle in barangay governance. When the term is orderly, the service is also orderly.
We thank the President for the immediate enactment of Republic Act No. 12326.
We also thank our colleagues in the Senate, as well as our fellow lawmakers in the House of Representatives, for their support and cooperation in passing this reform.
With their help, we have enacted a law that will provide for a more stable, more efficient, and more just governance in our barangays.
